An innovative and fast learning mechanical engineer to complement our bioproduction platform development and play a key role in driving the transition to animal-free agriculture.

About Us:

Unicorn Biotechnologies is an early-stage biotech company backed by Entrepreneur First, SOSV and other leading US/European investors. We are developing a next-generation biomanufacturing platform to accelerate the cultivated meat revolution. By removing the biomanufacturing bottleneck preventing cultivated meat transitioning from the lab bench to supermarket shelves. Our technology will create more just, safe, and sustainable food systems and drive the transition to animal-free agriculture.

The Role:

You will design and develop novel hardware in conjunction with scientists to accelerate biotechnology research, specifically bioreactors for the cultivated meat space. You will be involved in the whole product development cycle, from understanding user requirements through to delivering prototypes and ultimately manufacturable designs. The fast pace of a startup will mean that you will be expected to stretch your skillsets to meet the demands of changing technical priorities and help support internal scientific R&D projects where appropriate.

Need to Have:

• Experience in mechanical design & CAD (Solidworks preferable).
• Experience of rapid prototyping including hands-on work (3D printing and manual prototyping).
• Ability to perform engineering calculations to support design (both solid and fluid mechanics).
• Keen attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and keep accurate design documentation records.
• Ability to work across and communicate with a team of talented multi-disciplinary engineers and scientists.
• You will likely have a Masters/DEng/PhD in Mech, Bio, Aero, ACSE, EEE, Civil and industry experience. However, if you can demonstrate the necessary skills and experience for the role, we will consider you from whatever walk of life you come to us from.

Nice to Have:

• Knowledge and experience working directly on R&D projects ideally in a commercial environment with hardware/software/biomaterial considerations within industrial systems, medical devices, life sciences or similar.
• Electrical and electronic design and development, including hands-on electronics skills (PCB design, soldering etc.).  
• Ability to program, especially embedded systems (c++, python, git). 
• Experience with good documentation practice, CE marking and ISOs.
• Working knowledge of cell biology and cell culture processes.
