Because, Animals is the world’s first company developing cultured meat for cats and dogs. Cultured meat is not a meat alternative: cultured meat is meat grown in an alternative way. The difference between traditional meat and cultured meat is that the latter is produced:

  • without raising or slaughtering animals;
  • without contributing to climate change;
  • without antibiotics (and the development of antibiotic-resistant pathogens); and
  • without the threat of spreading animal-borne diseases (such as COVID-19)

Cultured meat stands to be among the most transformative biotechnologies the world has ever benefited from, and Because, Animals is looking for brilliant scientific minds to join our team.

Data Scientist (m/w/d) / Full Time

We are looking for a Data Scientist to join the Because, Animals team in beautiful Vienna, Austria.

The successful candidate will develop cutting-edge computational methods to help inform our R&D, in close collaboration with our optimization and scale-up teams. In particular, the candidate will primarily contribute to developing our AI biochemist, Claire, with the ultimate goal of optimizing every aspect of cell culture.

Perks include tackling diverse, interesting and challenging problems to change the world for the better, in a flexible and positive work environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leverage computational methods and data to extract insights into how to elicit desired behaviour from cultured cells; this includes, but is not limited to:
  1. Developing methods to automatically construct and analyze biochemical networks from ontologies and databases, published papers, and genetic data
  2. Simulating and analyzing inter- and intra-cellular dynamics and their dependence on environmental factors
  • Collaboratively iterate with scientists to test and refine analysis methods above
  • Implement and integrate methods above into an end-to-end system ready for use by stem-cell scientists and bioengineers
  • Expand the set of data sources integrated into our existing system
  • Contribute to a well-maintained, tested and documented codebase

Position Requirements

  • An MSc in a quantitative field (PhD a plus), e.g., computer science, computational biology, physics, mathematics, statistics, or a related field, with a focus on modelling and/or analysis, and a strong computational component
  •  5+ years of work experience on collaborative software projects with shared code base in a scientific/technical capacity with a focus on data, modelling and/or machine learning
  • Exceptional mathematical and conceptual modelling skills
  • Solid understanding of end-to-end software architecture, development, and deployment in production environments, including Docker, cloud deployment, CI/CD, and automated tests in Python and Linux
  • Able and excited to continually learn and master state-of-the-art methods, languages, and frameworks
  • Team player who relishes collaborating on cutting-edge solutions to impactful problems
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Prior experience with biological/biochemical ontologies, gene expression data, and/or modelling inter- and intra-cellular processes a big plus
  • Legally authorized to work in the EU (exceptional candidates residing in and legally eligible to work in the US or  Canada will also be considered)

What we offer

  • Be a part of a rapidly growing biotech company with headquarters in the USA and subsidiary companies in Canada and Austria
  • An exceptional, diverse team of passionate colleagues that are driven to go the extra mile. We are animal-focused, environment-focused, and human-focused and our work reflects these values. We work hard, and love what we do.
  • A competitive salary
  • Opportunities for personal and career development
  • Cutting-edge R&D work with high impact on some of the world’s most pressing problems
  • High flexibility and self-responsibility
  • Possibility for primarily remote work (must be based in Austria, the US or Canada)
  • KlimaTicket Ö (Austria-wide transit pass)
